Banned Book Week September 30 - October 4, 2013
The freshman English classes learned about freedom of speech and expression this year during Banned Book Week. We talked about what rights we have as readers. Some of the books on this years banned book list that were surprising to all of us are The Adventure of Super Diaper Baby and Ender's Game. The Webster's Collegiate Dictionary also brought up lively discussion.

Banned Book Week October 1 - 5, 2012

The IVC High School library is joining libraries across the nation in celebrating Banned Book week October 1-5. During the week the books that have been challenged somewhere in the United States in the last five years have been pulled from the shelves, covered in brown paper and displayed separately. Symbolically, this shows how the author's voice and ideas are hidden and covered up when a challenge leads to a banning.
Students and teachers have been stopping in to ask why some surprising titles are on the banned book list. Some of the notable titles that have grabbed attention are: the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Diary of Anne Frank and many others. This has been a great opportunity to discuss our Constitution, the school's selection policy, challenge procedures, openness, and making positive choices.
